Folkestone Remembers -
Holocaust Memorial Day in the United Kingdom

On Monday 27 January 2020, a commemoration service will be held in the Town of Folkestone to mark the annual Holocaust Memorial Day, an internationally recognised day to remember the millions of people who were murdered or whose lives were changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and in the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Held in the Methodist Church Hall and The Garden of Remembrance, Sandgate Road, Folkestone, and led by the Mayor’s Chaplain, Reverend Eileen Webb, the service will be attended by the Town Mayor, Town Councillors, local dignitaries and students from local schools and colleges. Students have undertaken their own research and will take part in the commemorations to remember those who died in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
The Theme set by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for 2020 is ‘Stand Together’ - Students have been asked to explore how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising certain groups, and how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together with their neighbours, and speaking out against oppression.

Today there is increasing division in communities across the UK and the world. Now more than ever, we need to stand together with others in our communities in order to stop division and the spread of identity-based hostility in our society. Everyone can take some action to support others - by using our voices, presence, platform or influence.
The Town Mayor, Town Councillors and local students would like to extend a warm invitation to all members of the local community to this year’s commemorations, which are scheduled to commence at 11.00am in the Methodist Church Hall in Sandgate Road and conclude in the Garden of Remembrance. Following the service, there will be the opportunity to share and sample food from different cultures provided by students.
